  6. Madam Sabina, another well orchestrated piece of the jigsaw of the love story you have started to pen. This time you have narrated and written first person. And I for one think it’s a brilliant change. When authors write in first person, it is as though they are immersed in the story and sometimes, they are a part of the story themselves. A few of my favorite first person writings are The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Mark Twain), The Sun Also Rises (Hemingway) and To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee). But your fist person narrative keeps on tugging me back to “Heart of Darkness” by Joesph Conrad. But that can be left for a conversation for another day. Today, lets talk about the environments each of the three characters are living in. The calm collected Abhijit, the wounded Rabya, and her bitter cousin are each living in conditions that peeks into and also reflects their very own souls. And may I add, that in itself makes this write up mesmerizing piece, in my humble mind.

Rabya is hurting and she is in the depths of dark despair. From the darkness of the grave, she is reaching out to her light, Abhijit. She is wounded by her cousin and she is questioning her love. Rabya needs affirmation from Abhijit. She even hears the wailing of the ambulance on it’s way to the hospital. Is that her heart crying out for help? She is calling her doctor to make her whole again. Just a simple phone call to Abhijit makes her feel better enough to pout like a teenage girl in love! The color of love is red. And Rabya is wrapped up in it, as her red blanket signifies. Red is the color of sexuality and it can stimulate deeper and more intimate passions in us. In the Chinese culture, red is the color of good luck and in the Indian subcontinent, it symbolizes purity and often it’s is used in wedding gowns. But I ask you Madam Sabina, is Rabya’s red blanket meant to be a red flag to Abhijit?

Abhijit is calm. He is elevated, God like. He is not in a hurry. The glass of water next to his bedside tells me that his life is full. Like the cover on his glass, his life is sheltered, protected and he does not want to get it dirty. Abhijit’s dog, lying in his bedroom is of immense significance in my opinion. The dog’s agenda is simple, fathomable, and overt. There are no ulterior motives with a dog, no mind games, no second guessing, no complicated negotiations of bargains, and guilt trips or grudges if a request is denied. People love dogs, Madam Sabina, you can never go wrong by adding a dog to a story. But to me, the dog is there are Abhijit’s protector. It’s a female dog as well. I do recall the pieces of the story where Abhijit’s mother was his protector in his childhood days. The great hound is there protecting her master from all harm. Abhijit is never alone. Even in the intimacy of his bedroom, his DOG is there. Interestingly, Madam Sabina, DOG spelled backwards is GOD!

And then there is Rabya’s cousin, Mishu. She is well educated and lives in this great nation. Yet her mind is dark. She wants to pull Rabya in there. She is Dr. Faustus and the Mephistopheles morphed into one. Jekyll and Hyde. She is buried in her lush queen size bed like she belongs in the depths of Hades. In hell, it’s hot as her hot electric blanket tells us. Rabya feels she in the darkness of the grave after she talks with her “sweet” cousin. In the heat of the moment and from the heat of her soul, Mishu transforms into Mrs. Rahman and uncoils like a snake or like satan emerging from the hotness of a snake pit. Cousin Mishu’s heart is erupting like a volcano. if ones heart is a volcano, how shall you expect flowers of love to bloom?

In closing, I would like quote two great people. One is a hindu and the other a muslim. And I will let the chips fall where they may:

I love you when you bow in your mosque, kneel in your temple, pray in your church. For you and I are sons of one religion, and it is the spirit.
    -Gibran

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
    Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
    By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
    Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

"I would like quote two great people. One is a hindu and the other a muslim" - In this regard, may I say, Khalil Gibran was born into a Maronite Catholic family in what is known today as Lebanon. He was not a Muslim. Due to a mistake at school, he was registered as "Kahlil Gibran".
Rabindranath Tagore, although born to Brahmin parents of Kolkata with ancestral roots at Jessore, was a follower of Brahmoism, a monotheistic reformist and renaissance movement of Hindu religion.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

    • Mr. Ahasan, you are absolutely right of course. I should have left it at "two great poets". Tagore's family was a reformist within the hindu religion. But he was born in a brahmin family. Gibran was born as a catholic, and he was originally from Lebanon. But he had a tremendous Islamic and Sufi influence as his writings show. He saw things being done in the name of Christianity which he could not accept. In his writing, he raged against the oppression of women and the tyranny of the Church and called for freedom from Ottoman rule. Interestingly, Gibran's best selling book is called "The Prophet".

Thank you Mr. Ahasan for the correction, for reading my post, and providing feedback. I stand corrected.
